Earlier this year, during his talk at WordCamp Europe, John Maeda announced the very first Automattic Design Awards. The news went down a storm amongst the designers in the room, and here at Angry Creative, we were especially pleased. The concept of celebrating the creative achievements of those in the WordPress community is something we’ve been backing for some time now.
A few months have passed and the awards are well on their way. Updates are being posted almost daily on the Automattic Design Awards blog, most recent to date is Alexis Loyd’s post on the importance of acknowledging and growing strong open-source design principles.
What exactly are the Automattic Design Awards?
Excerpt from the Automattic Design Awards blog: It’s the start of putting a spotlight on some of the best designed ideas out there in the WordPress ecosystem on the eve of Project Gutenberg’s official release. There will be nine awards total with three trophies awarded in each category of Best Site, Best Solution, and Best Style.
As you might expect, a lot of thought and effort has gone into the category choices, the matrix above is an early insight into the innovative way the awards are being run. Particular emphasis goes to work that shows empathy for users needs, and designs that demonstrate simplicity and artistry.
Our hope is that the Automattic Design Awards will offer a new platform to drive excellence in design for WordPress. If the outcome is a few more people feel appreciated for their extraordinary efforts, then we are surely in a good place. As for Angry Creative, we’ve bagged a place on the jury, and we’re frantically working on an inaugural event to co-inside with WordCamp US.
