My name is Kaisa Andersson and I study Graphic Design and Communication in Norrköping. For five weeks I had an internship at Angry Creative. This is the story of those weeks, a company presentation and the concrete project Enklawa Dwa.
As my first assignment, I made a company presentation for Angry Creative using Reveal.js. It was to describe who they are and what the business looks like. It was a perfect opportunity to gain insight into the company and how the process from order to finished wordpress site can work. The end result was an online presentation, with text and graphics.
Then came the next assignment: Enklawa Dwa.
Joakim Hedström at the advertising agency Anfang, a partner of Angry Creative, is also the manager of the Polish industrial band Enklawa Dwa. “A concrete-inspired art project”, as he described it.
I started by trying to figure out what the problem was with the old site, and what the requirements were for the new one. After reading through the website and thinking about different ideas, I came up with a concept. Based on that, I made wireframes (sketches) to show what I had in mind, and what feeling I wanted the website to give. Joakim was on the same track and gave the go-ahead to proceed.
After a thorough review of the project tool, and some help from Jimmy to steer the project, the real work began – the coding.
I translated the sketches into HTML. With a simple web page, the customer can see what it will actually look like in the end and which parts are “clickable”. After another approval from Joakim, I left the safety of school knowledge and stepped into a new world.
Using WordPress as a CMS
The advantage of WordPress is that there is tonnes of information and helpful souls. So I kick-started with a tutorial from Lynda. com that provided basic training to get me on the right track. Now I had the help of the extensive test page I had done before. All the css and structure was there, what I needed now was to translate the design into Wordpress language.
By putting together small pieces, I now build the same page as before. The big difference is that anyone (with login details) can contribute new posts and make updates. During the work, my best friend was Google. It had the solutions, but often too many. Because when there are two solutions to a problem, one is often better, but which one? I enlisted the help of Jimmy and Sammy who pointed out the good solutions.
After a couple of weeks of work, the page was ready. The end result is a fairly simple solution, with mainly a blog, a page for art and one for music. The home page acts as a hub, displaying the latest updates from the different pages. The easiest way to visit it is at enklawadwa.pl.
The Enklawa Dwa project has been a fun challenge! Delivering a solution to the customer was probably the best part of all. A big thank you to Enklawa Dwa for daring to give me a project to develop with!
Having an internship at Angry Creative has been educational, something that is noticeable not least because no one understands what I’m talking about anymore. Most people disappear as soon as I mention WordPress. The internship is also something that has given me a taste for exploring more technical solutions – and not backing down if I lack knowledge.
Thanks for this time! And who knows, I might drop in again. 🙂
